Google releases Android 2.3 OS




Today, Google announced the Android 2.3 OS which will be known as Gingerbread. The first Gingerbread mobile phone will be the Google Nexus S.

Some of the new features of Gingerbread which Google has revealed are :

  • A refined stock UI.
  • Access to front-facing camera from camera app
  • Multitouch capabilities to enter keyboard shortcuts
  • Switch to voice mode to make text corrections
  • Faster keyboard.
  • Better power/battery management .
  • Improved task manager.
  • Better management of applications interface.
  • The stock music player has been given an overhaul
  • New audio effects like reverb and bass boost included alongside a 5-band equalizer.
  • Internet calling (to SIP account numbers)
  • NFC Purchases

And the highlight of the new OS is its support for 3D gyroscopes and other spatial sensors. Now developers will be able to make apps which detect motion and device position. The new OS also features a barometer. Expect lots of apps for weather obsessed people.
